Earlier this year, the Army designated the ATEC HPW3000 to the T900. The engine is a dual compressor design for Apache and Black Hawk helicopters. According to the Advanced Turbine Engine Company (ATEC), “The assignment of a customer naming designation is typical as an engine development program matures.” The T900-HPW-900 engine will have an “XT” designation (XT900-HPW-900) until preliminary flight rating (PFR) has been achieved. Once PFR has been achieved, the engine will have a “YT” designation (YT900-HPW-900). The ATEC engine will be given a “T” designation (T900-HPW- 900) once full qualification is complete.
ATEC is a joint venture of Honeywell and Pratt & Whitney, who have teamed up to provide a state-of-the-art dual turbine compressor engine under the Army’s Improved Turbine Engine Program (ITEP). The T900 provides power for higher payloads while using less fuel and is designed to operate at high efficiency in desert environments.
